It utilizes a screw compressor as its primary driving component within a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. Its purpose is to cool down ambient-temperature water (typically circulating water) into chilled water (e.g., 7°C supply) which is then pumped to air-handling terminals (such as fan coil units or air handling units - AHUs) to absorb heat. The warmed water returns to the chiller (e.g., 12°C return) to be cooled again. The condensation heat rejected by the chiller is transferred to a separate cooling water loop and ultimately dissipated to the atmosphere via a cooling tower.
Core Working Principle:
Compression: The screw compressor (single-screw or twin-screw) draws in low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator. The intermeshing rotation of the male and female rotors compresses the gas into a high-temperature, high-pressure vapor.
Condensation: The high-pressure, hot refrigerant vapor enters the condenser. Heat is rejected to external cooling water flowing through the condenser tubes, causing the refrigerant to condense into a high-pressure liquid. The cooling water heats up and is pumped to the cooling tower for heat dissipation.
Expansion: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion device (such as a thermostatic expansion valve or electronic expansion valve), where its pressure and temperature drop significantly, resulting in a cold, low-pressure mixture of liquid and vapor.
Evaporation: This low-pressure mixture enters the evaporator. It absorbs heat from the chilled water (or process water) circulating over the evaporator tubes, causing the refrigerant to evaporate.
